Day 2 - 12 Minute Total Body Workout

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Doesn’t seem like much of an accomplishment but if I am going to use this blog to keep a log I need to record it as an event. Today we worked on the mat and did modified squats, sit-ups and leg lifts. I discovered I can barely lift my legs even with the weight between my feet. Stands to reason, most of my excess weight is in my butt and legs.

We only managed two sets of each even then. Chuck does better than I. He actually did all the leg lifts with the dumbbell.

p.s. If you are tempted to join us you can order the book from Amazon by clicking on the picture on this post. I do get paid a small percentage of the purchase price if you buy through this link.

Starting 12-Minute Total Body Workout With Hubby

Today my husband, Chuck and I started a workout routine together.  We tried this many years back and liked it when we did it, but somehow we let it slip away.  Hopefully, this time we will stick to it!

We are doing Joyce L Vedral’s 12-Minute Total Body Workout.  I think the philosophy behind this is “I can do anything for 12 minutes, right?” I also like the fact that all you need is a couple of 3# weights and a kitchen chair to do it.

Admittedly, I am not fond of exercise but it has come to the point where I have let myself become totally unfit and it is time to make a change. I am thrilled that my husband (who faces the same dilemma suggested we tackle this together). He is really an inspiration for me.

Wish us luck and check back to see our progress. I may even get up the nerve to post before and after pictures once I get to the after stage.

Day 1: Not too bad. Obviously these muscles haven’t been worked in years. A bit apprehensive about how we will feel tomorrow. Routine moved quickly though and was over almost before I was tempted to quit.

New Year, New Start, New Program

We are finally settled here in San Felipe and I can no longer offer my travels and lack of roots as an excuse for doing or not doing what I need to be doing.

This morning my sister-in-law and I started a new exercise program… it’s the 5 Day Workout program, which I picked up at Costco a few weeks ago.  Amazon doesn’t carry it so I can’t give you a link for it here.

Having only gone through the first day, I can’t offer much of a review except to state that the first day was tougher than I was ready for.

I also started back through my I Can Make You Thin DVDs.  This I can give you a link to to the book and intro CD.  McKenna now has an online program you can join for $10/month. For some odd reason, McKenna doesn’t offer the opportunity for me to be an affiliate in the US even though he does for folks in the UK. But I like the program so I would recommend it even though I don’t make money if you sign up. I don’t personally belong to the web program anymore, I signed for a while when the membership included the DVD program. I like going back through the self-hypnosis recordings periodically.

Slipping Back Into Old Habits - Weight Loss Recap

Veg bunches As I write, I am sitting here munching a bowl of popcorn.  Granted it’s “healthy” popcorn, not heavily buttered or sweetened but that’s not the problem.  The problem is I am eating unconsciously and by habit, not because I am hungry and need fuel to function.  The problem is I am doing something else (reading email and browsing the internet) and not focusing in the taste of the food or the signals my body is trying to send me, saying I’m full and don’t need to eat more.

Fortunately one of those emails was my Dailybread365 reminder.  Now I have been known to on occasion skip these daily reminders, maybe even delete them withont reading them but every now and then I open it up and read Lucy-Ann Prideaux’s  healthy nutritional guidelines and I am redirected back on track.

They remind me the the autopilot systems on an airplane.  The pilot puts in the location that he wants to go to and the plane’s GPS system detects when the plane is off track and corrects it’s heading.  Lucy-Ann’s email a day does that for me, helps me see when I am off course and gets me headed back into the right direction.

Why is Losing Weight So Tough?

By Deon Du Plessis

If you’ve been on the diet treadmill then you know just how tough it is to lose weight. We all want to look great and we all want to have that body that we know we would be happy with, but why is it that so few people ever get there? Why is it so hard and why can’t we just get on a diet and lose the weight?

I believe that the biggest reason why we can’t lose weight easily is simply because of habits. Habits have a bigger control over our behaviors than most of us care to believe. In motivational books the story of the elephant is often used to explain the power of habits.

When a baby elephant is brought into captivity it has to be tied down with strong chains. It will constantly try to break free from the chain. As time goes by, the elephant will get used to the constrain until the time comes when he would not even try to escape any more. Even when the chain gets replaces by a thread, the elephant can be held down.

Losing weight is very much like this. A lifetime of eating patterns and beliefs about food can tie us down like that. It can exert so much power and control over us that we can’t break free. Even though it’s a weak thread holding us in our old habits, we can’t seem to break free.

Losing weight is very much about breaking habits and breaking free from all those old beliefs about food, health and our bodies that keeps us from making the change and losing the weight. In the end, weight loss is not that hard. Eat well and get some exercise. That’s the whole secret. The challenge is not in knowing what to do, but rather in doing what you already know and this is where changing habits come in.

You will need to make some changes because your current behaviors is what got you to be overweight. Keeping with your current habits will only get you more of what you don’t want. That’s why you have to change the habit first. When you change the habit, you change that automatic behavior and when you change the automatic behavior 99% of the battle is won.

Using willpower and constantly watching your actions will never give you long term results. This is what most diets encourage. It may work for a while, but in the end habit will take over. So, work on your habits and work and on that inner relationship you have about food, your body and your health. As you change this relationship you will start to see things in a new light. When you realize that it’s not a chain that’s tying you down, but a flimsy thread, you can break it and break with the habit.

Water Aerobics Exercises - My Cup of Tea

Wet peek-a-booIt’s no secret, I really don’t like to exercise.  In fact I hate anything that may cause me to break a sweat yet there is one type of activity that falls into the category of aerobics that I do somewhat enjoy.  This is water aerobics.  I think it has to do with that sweating thing…

This week we are settling into our new summer home in Newport Washington and I am delighted to find that there is a first class fitness center located a few miles from home.  The Camas Center, located on the Kalispel Reservation, is not only the most incredible facility I have ever seen but the most affordable.  They have graduated rates for seniors… they call us elders and the older we get the lower the cost.   There is no long term contract and I can freeze my membership when I am on the road.  My brother and his wife are regulars and I will be too when summering in Newport!  Camas Center is certainly my cup of tea when it comes to staying fit and living a healthier lifestyle.

Food is More than Just a Bunch of Calories

Stack-Em-UpThe lesson I received today from Lucy-Ann Prideaux demonstrates why I so like DailyBread. The title of today’s article is Key Nutrients involved in health and energy production.   In Day 113, like so many others, Lucy-Ann gives a great in depth explanation of the vital role good foods play in our health and well-being.  For so many years of bad diets I have looked at food as numbers:  calories, carbohydrates, ounces.  Lucy-Ann brings the picture back in focus and reminds us of the complex make-up of the food on our plates and explains how these components work together to fuel our daily activities. All my life I was told “you need to take your vitamins.”

In our house vitamins and minerals were something that came in pill form and were kept in a bottle on the kitchen counter, which incidentally we rarely opened.

These mysterious elements were never directly associated with the food we ate.  This lack of association was I am sure unintentional but probably very accurate in reality for my mother came from a generation that first off overcooked every vegetable in the house and second was the first generation to serve her family packaged, preprocessed foods like hamburger helper and TV dinners.

I was an adult living away from home before I ever tasted fresh picked peas.  We ate canned peas, green beans and corn.  I never saw anything but iceberg lettuce in our house.  On the rare occasions that fresh vegetables did grace our tables they were boiled until they had no color or nutritional value left in them.

So like I said, I was told “take your vitamins” not eat them.

DailyBread365 not only explains the micro-components at work in our meals but also provides menus and recipe suggestions to help us make the transition to a more wholesome lifestyle.

Think and Lose’s Weight Loss Through Hypnosis Tactic May Be Intriguing

http://meltingmama.typepad.comBy Shane Crafton

Review Summary

Hypnosis has been used to institute behavioral changes for quite some time. Although it is unconventional, you may have heard of people undergoing hypnosis to assist in quitting smoking or to overcome chronic pain. The Think and Lose program is based on the success of hypnosis in changing behavior, and the program promises that it will help people overcome poor eating habits and other behaviors that lead them to remain overweight. The creator of the system seems reputable, as the site claims he was the former clinical hypnotherapist working with the American Heart Association; however, this does not make his program effective.

Ingredients at a Glance

People who purchase this program will be required to listen to daily hypnotherapy sessions led by the creator, Dan Mannarino. His sessions include positive reinforcement and statements said to act on your subconscious, where cravings and poor eating habits reportedly originate. This leads, according to the website, to the ability to eat less and be content, as well as changes in food cravings. According to the company you may go from craving chocolate or french fries to craving carrots and fruit.

Ingredients in Focus

The Think and Lose program begins when users listen to a full 30 minute hypnosis session. After that first session, individuals can drop down to listening to a 10 minute reinforcement session daily. In the second week, the time requirement drops even further and Mannarino recommends individuals listen to a 2 minute session daily. With the purchase of the program you get an instructional DVD that attempts to answer any potential questions, a CD with three hypnotism sessions and a bonus disc. While the company may be commended for trying something new, this program has not been proven to be effective. However, there are many other options on the market for those seeking weight loss results. We have found that many of the best weight loss programs are including supplements with high quality ingredients like Hoodia Gordonii, which has been proven to suppress the appetite.

Cost

A reasonable price is refreshing in the world of weight loss products. The Think and Lose system costs only $39.95 plus $12.95 shipping. This total amount is not billed until a 30 day trial period has passed. According to the website this 30 day period does not start until you actually receive the product. This means that if you order the product and it doesn’t live up to your expectations, you can send it back within the 30 days and not be billed at all.

Positives

· 30 day trial period exists

· New and unconventional approach

Negatives

· No supporting science made available by company

· Lacks high quality supplements

· May not suppress the appetite, burn fat or boost the metabolism

Final Thoughts

A new approach to weight loss may be very alluring to people who have not had much success in the past. While this newness and difference may be appealing, it is difficult to tell if it is effective when the company does not provide any scientific information or clinical studies to back its claims. Although there is a lack of plentiful information available about this product on the web, people are welcome to take a look at the links below for more information. We believe that an informed decision to purchase is always the best decision.

Before purchasing any weight loss product, it would be a good idea to see what people are saying about Think and Lose on the very popular DietBlogTalk.com

Day 80 and Little Embarrased

I recently received a letter from Lucy of DailyBread365.com asking if I would be interested in writing an update of my progress since starting with DB365.  As you can see from the title of this article I have been receiving the DB pages for nearly three months I must admit that I have very little progress to report in the weight loss arena, in fact this morning I got on the scale and discovered a ten pound gain since my last weigh-in at the doctors a few weeks ago.  However, let me qualify that statement a bit.  First I don’t normally weigh myself anymore.  As noted the earlier weigh-in had been mandatory at my annual exam.  The second had been also mandatory, following surgery yesterday for the removal of my gall bladder.  I’m chalking up the drastic jump to the three or four bags of saline they had pumped into me in the last 24 hours.

However, in spite of my denial and self-justification, I must admit my progress has not been spectacular.  I can’t blame Lucy’s lovely program either as I have been pretty successful at ignoring the daily emails offering me very sound advise and tempting recipes.  I must apologize to Lucy because even though the recipes always look enticing … cooking isn’t my thing and I usually just breeze right past them.  I do occasionally (at least once a week) take time to read the articles and I almost always agree with Lucy’s guidance, I just don’t always apply them.

I do love receiving them though.  They are like a friendly reminder from a good friend who only has my best interest at heart and I need that nudge here and there to keep on track.  So sorry Lucy that I don’t have better news to report but thank you for being there to point me in the right direction again, and again, and again.  Once of these days going the down the right road will get to be a habit and maybe I quit straying off the path entirely.
